Notes from Camp: July 3, 2012

This was an unusual day for RA delegates. Vice President Biden was scheduled to speak, and delegates are always happy to hear from him. But appearances by Presidents and VPs are accompanied by serious security restrictions: last year’s security arrangements took hours and would up preventing some delegates from attending. Some changes were promised for today, perhaps the most significant being the cancellation of the morning caucus. Since breakfast had already been ordered, so delegates were able to get breakfast and head right over to the Convention Center.

Another change concerned security clearance. Last year, delegates were encouraged to come to the RA without bags, but few complied, and the security checks took hours. This time, delegates were told that there would be separate lines for those with bags and those without. Evidently most delegates did everything they could to come to the RA without bags. Whether because of this change, the larger number of magnetometers, or other reasons, the lines moved more quckly, and NEA member Jill Biden was able to begin speaking to the delegates just a few minutes after the published starting time of 10:00.
